The U.S. State Department’s travel advisory page for Mexico received an alert which happened to coincide with the devastating news outside of Quintana Roo-8 murdered bodies had been found outside the resort town of Cancun. The alert and graphic nature of the murders sparked a media frenzie issuing a travel advisory, even though these incidents were not related. The U.S. Embassy in Mexico updated and corrected their advisory, reasurring travelers and tourists that there are no threats to travel in Quintana Roo State, which includes popular destinations such as Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Cancun, Tulum and the Riviera Maya.
